The NY Essential Workers Coalition is made of over 85 unions, worker centers, immigrant rights organizations, legal service providers, health and safety organizations, and community-based organizations. Together, we saw that working people were denied the basic right to a safe and healthy workplace, and together we are building a statewide movement to protect our communities.

For more than a year, LWC has fought to provide the tools that workers need to be safe at the workplace during the pandemic. The NY Heroes Act gives every worker, regardless of immigration status, a plan to protect them from airborne infectious diseases like COVID-19. The New York Health and Essential Rights Act (NY HERO Act) was signed into law on May 5, 2021. Section 2 of the HERO Act, which took effect on November 1, 2021, requires employers who employ at least ten employees to allow employees to form joint labor-management workplace safety committees.

Our members took the lead and participated in hundreds of events and direct actions to ensure we won this campaign.
