After 18 years of wage theft and labor exploitation, a worker at Dollar Depot and More has decided to organize and stand up for his rights. Salvador worked 62 to 64 hours per week without receiving minimum wage or overtime pay. Additionally, his employer is violating New Jersey's earned sick leave law, constituting another form of wage theft. The community stands firmly with Salvador to ensure that Dollar Depot and More pay what they owe and end retaliation. The employer also verbally abused Salvador in front of the community while he was raising awareness about his situation.
As part of our organizing campaign, Salvador, together with community members and allies, delivered a demand letter to the employer. The letter calls for compliance with the law, payment of at least the minimum wage, settlement of all wages owed, and improved working conditions for all employees.
Our campaign demands include:
- 1. Dollar Depot & More must comply with wage and hour laws: Begin paying the minimum wage and settle all owed wages.
- 2. Respect the Earned Sick Leave Law: Workers must be compensated when they are sick. The law requires nearly all employers to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year, earned at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked.
- 3. Stop retaliation: The employer must not cut hours, change schedules, threaten, or intimidate workers for organizing.
