Justice For Mayra: Corner Coin-op Laundromat

On January 18, 2025, we launched the "Justice for Mayra Flores" campaign to advocate for justice for Mayra and her colleagues at Corner Coin-op Laundromat, also known as S&J Central Corporation, in East Orange, NJ. Mayra, a dedicated leader at LWC, has endured two years of wage theft and exploitation. She has worked over 74 hours a week without overtime pay, earned less than the minimum wage, and been denied access to earned sick leave, violating New Jersey wage and hour laws.

Mayra's responsibilities include assisting customers, operating washing and drying machines, selling laundry supplies, washing, drying, and folding clothing from drop-offs, cleaning the laundromat, and much more. She cleans the washers and dryers twice a week without proper training or protective gear. Since her employer does not provide personal protective equipment (PPE), the workers are forced to purchase their own masks and gloves without reimbursement.

As part of our organizing campaign, Mayra, alongside community members and allies, delivered a demand letter to the employer. This letter calls for the employer to comply with the law, begin paying at least the minimum wage, settle what is owed, and improve working conditions for all employees.

We need your support to amplify the impact of this campaign. Stay tuned for more information!
